There are three possible explannations about the origin of the name "Pai" :

1. It may come from "Chang Plai", a word for the wild male elephants which populated the area at that time. Due to local dialects the word "Plai" could have lost a letter and change into "Pai"
2. A Shan tribe named "Pai" (pronounced in a high tone) immigrated from Burma and influenced the culture quite a lot.
3. The River Pai, named by the Shan language where "Pai" means to go not straight (something like forth and back).

Amphur Pai is located 110 km north-east from Maehongson, surface is 2244.7 sqkm, the major part of the province has forest on high montains (the highest in Huai Naam Dang), it has two important rivers Mae Naam Kong and Mae Naam Pai, there are three seasons: Winter when temperature may fall down to 2 degrees centigrade, at some days the get warmer and slightly change to the hot season (hottest month is April).
